Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand what a mosasaur is, its habitat, diet, and its role in the prehistoric ecosystem. The student will also engage in creative activities to reinforce their learning about this fascinating marine reptile.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Colored pencils or crayons
- Access to a quiet space for reading and drawing
- Basic knowledge about dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures (to start the discussion)
Activities
- Story Time: Read a short story or summary about mosasaurs. This could include facts about their size, where they lived, and what they ate. The student can ask questions during the reading to enhance understanding.
- Draw Your Mosasaur: After learning about mosasaurs, the student will draw their own version of a mosasaur. Encourage them to be creative with colors and features!
- Mosasaur Habitat Diorama: Using paper, the student can create a simple drawing of the ocean where mosasaurs lived, including other sea creatures and plants that would have been in their environment.
- Fun Facts Presentation: The student will choose 3 fun facts about mosasaurs and present them to a family member or stuffed animal as if they are teaching them about it.
Talking Points
- "A mosasaur was a big marine reptile that lived a long, long time ago, during the time of the dinosaurs!"
- "Mosasaur means 'lizard of the Meuse River'! Isn't it cool how names can tell us where things came from?"
- "Mosasaur could grow as long as a school bus! Can you imagine swimming next to something that big?"
- "They were great swimmers and used their strong tails to move quickly in the water, just like dolphins do!"
- "Mosasaur ate fish, squid, and even other reptiles! What do you think it would be like to be that kind of predator?"
- "They lived in oceans and seas, not on land. So, they were very different from dinosaurs like T. rex!"
- "Even though mosasaurs are extinct now, we can learn a lot about them from fossils. What do you think a fossil is?"
