Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the importance of walking to the mailbox, practice their walking skills, and learn about the surrounding environment during the walk.

Materials and Prep

No additional materials are required for this lesson. Before starting, ensure that the path to the mailbox is safe and clear of obstacles. Check the weather to make sure it's a good day for a walk!

Activities

  • Walking Practice: Begin by walking together in a safe area. Encourage the student to practice walking by taking small steps and pointing out interesting things along the way, like flowers or birds.

  • Mailbox Exploration: Once you reach the mailbox, take a moment to look at it together. Talk about what a mailbox is for and why we send letters. You can even pretend to put a letter in the mailbox!

  • Nature Scavenger Hunt: While walking, create a simple scavenger hunt. Ask the student to find things like a green leaf, a rock, or a bug. Celebrate each find with excitement!

Talking Points

  • "Look at your feet! Can you take big steps? Let's walk to the mailbox together!"
  • "What color is the mailbox? Can you say 'red' or 'blue'?"
  • "Do you hear the birds? They are singing! Let's listen!"
  • "Wow! You found a leaf! Great job! What color is it?"
  • "Now we are at the mailbox! What do we put in here? Yes, letters!"
