Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jaimie will be able to understand the basic concepts of English, Math, and Science through the fun activity of making pancakes. Jaimie will learn to follow a recipe, measure ingredients, and explore the science behind cooking while also practicing vocabulary and simple math skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Ingredients for pancakes: flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, milk, eggs, and butter.
  • Cooking utensils: mixing bowl, whisk, measuring cups and spoons, skillet or frying pan, and spatula.
  • Access to a stove for cooking the pancakes.
  • Notebook and pencil for writing down observations and measurements.

Before the lesson, ensure that all ingredients are available and that the cooking area is safe and clean. Familiarize Jaimie with the cooking utensils and how to use them safely.

Activities

  • Reading the Recipe:

Start by reading the pancake recipe together. Discuss the different ingredients and their purposes. This will help Jaimie with vocabulary and comprehension skills.

  • Measuring Ingredients:

Jaimie will practice measuring out the ingredients using measuring cups and spoons. This activity will reinforce Jaimie's math skills by introducing concepts of volume and fractions.

  • Cooking Pancakes:

Once the batter is prepared, Jaimie will pour the mixture onto the skillet and watch the pancakes cook. This hands-on activity will teach Jaimie about heat and how it changes the state of the batter.

  • Writing Observations:

After cooking, Jaimie will write down what happened during the process. This will encourage writing skills and critical thinking as Jaimie reflects on the experience.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think each ingredient does in the pancake recipe?"
  • "Can you show me how to measure one cup of flour? What do you notice about the amount?"
  • "Why do you think we need to mix the dry ingredients separately from the wet ingredients?"
  • "What happens to the batter when we heat it? Can you describe the changes you see?"
  • "How did it feel to write down your observations? What was the most interesting part of making pancakes?"
