Objective

By the end of this lesson, Marion will improve her multiplication and division skills through hands-on activities that reinforce these concepts in a fun and engaging way. She will learn to apply these skills in real-world situations, making math more relatable and enjoyable.

Materials and Prep

  • Rope or string for measuring
  • Sticks or logs for building structures
  • Calculator (optional for checking work)
  • Notebook and pencil for recording measurements and calculations
  • Outdoor space for building activities

Before the lesson, ensure that the outdoor area is safe and suitable for building activities. Familiarize yourself with basic multiplication and division concepts to guide Marion effectively.

Activities

  • Building a Garden Bed

Marion will design and build a small garden bed. She will measure the length and width using the rope, then calculate the area (length x width). This activity will help her visualize multiplication as she figures out how much soil is needed.

  • Log Cabin Challenge

Using sticks or logs, Marion will create a mini log cabin. She will count the number of logs needed for each side and use division to determine how many logs she can use if she has a limited number. This will reinforce division as she distributes resources.

  • Nature Scavenger Hunt

Marion will go on a scavenger hunt to collect items from nature (like leaves, stones, etc.). She will categorize them and use multiplication to calculate the total number of items collected from different categories. For example, if she finds 5 types of leaves and collects 3 of each, she can calculate the total.

Talking Points

  • "Multiplication is like repeated addition. If you have 4 groups of 3 apples, how many apples do you have in total?"
  • "Division helps us share things equally. If you have 12 cookies and want to share them with 4 friends, how many cookies does each friend get?"
  • "When we build, we can use multiplication to find out how much space we need. For example, if our garden bed is 4 feet long and 3 feet wide, we can find the area by multiplying those two numbers."
  • "In our log cabin challenge, think of division as dividing your resources. If you have 10 logs and want to make 2 walls, how many logs can you use for each wall?"
  • "Using math in real-life situations, like building or measuring, helps us see why these skills are important. Can you think of other times when you might use multiplication or division?"
