Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a better understanding of basic grammar concepts such as nouns, verbs, and adjectives. They will also improve their ability to identify and use these parts of speech through engaging and interactive games.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper for writing
  • A timer (can be a phone or clock)
  • Optional: A fun hat or prop to wear during the games

Before the lesson, review the definitions of nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Make sure the student knows what each part of speech is and can give examples.

Activities

  • Noun Hunt: Set a timer for 5 minutes and have the student run around the house or yard to find as many nouns as they can. They can write them down on paper. After the time is up, discuss their findings.
  • Verb Charades: The student will pick a verb from a list you create together and act it out without speaking. You can guess the verb! Take turns acting and guessing.
  • Adjective Art: Have the student draw a picture of their favorite animal. Then, ask them to write down five adjectives that describe the animal. They can share their artwork and adjectives with you.
  • Grammar Relay: Create two teams (you and the student). Take turns saying a word, and the other team has to identify if it’s a noun, verb, or adjective. Keep score for a fun competition!

Talking Points

  • "Can you tell me what a noun is? Remember, a noun is a person, place, or thing!"
  • "What about verbs? They are action words! Can you think of some verbs you like?"
  • "Adjectives describe nouns. If I say 'happy dog,' what word is the adjective?"
  • "Let's play Noun Hunt! How many nouns can you find? Remember, they can be anything!"
  • "In Verb Charades, you’ll show us a verb without talking! Are you ready to act?"
  • "When you draw your favorite animal, think of words that describe it. What color is it? Is it big or small?"
  • "In Grammar Relay, we will see who can guess the most parts of speech. Let’s have fun with it!"
  • "Remember, learning grammar can be fun! You’re doing a great job!"
  • "At the end of our games, we will review what we learned. What was your favorite part?"
