Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and categorize words into three groups: Agudas, Llanas, and Esdrújulas. The student will also understand the rules for accentuation in each category and be able to create their own examples.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil for writing
- A list of common Spanish words (can be created beforehand)
- A timer (optional, for timed activities)
- Colorful markers or crayons (optional for decoration)
Before the lesson, review the definitions of Agudas, Llanas, and Esdrújulas to ensure the student has a basic understanding of each term.
Activities
- Word Hunt: The student will search through a list of words and categorize them into Agudas, Llanas, and Esdrújulas. They can use a highlighter to mark each category in different colors.
- Accentuation Rules Game: Create a fun game where the student has to guess if a word needs an accent mark or not, based on its category. Provide hints and let them explain why.
- Creative Story Writing: Ask the student to write a short story using at least five words from each category. Encourage them to illustrate their story with drawings.
- Word Creation Challenge: Challenge the student to come up with their own Agudas, Llanas, and Esdrújulas words. They can even invent silly words and explain their meanings!
Talking Points
- "Agudas are words that have the stress on the last syllable. Can you think of an example?"
- "Llanas are words that have the stress on the second-to-last syllable. What about these words? Do they sound familiar?"
- "Esdrújulas are words that have the stress on the third-to-last syllable, and they always have an accent mark. Can you find some Esdrújulas?"
- "Remember, Agudas only need an accent mark if they end in a vowel, 'n', or 's'. Can you think of a word that follows this rule?"
- "For Llanas, they only need an accent mark if they do NOT end in a vowel, 'n', or 's'. Can you find a word that needs an accent?"
- "Esdrújulas always have an accent mark! Let’s try to make some fun Esdrújulas words together!"
- "Why do you think it’s important to know how to categorize these words? How can it help you when you write or read in Spanish?"
- "Let’s play a game! I’ll say a word, and you tell me if it’s Aguda, Llana, or Esdrújula. Ready?"
- "Great job today! Remember, the more you practice, the easier it will become to identify these words!"
