Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of puberty, including the physical and emotional changes that occur during this time, and will feel more comfortable discussing these changes.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or markers
  • Notebook for journaling
  • Timer (optional)
  • Space for movement (if doing physical activities)
  • Basic knowledge of puberty (to guide the discussion)

Activities

  • Creative Drawing:

Have the student draw a comic strip that illustrates a day in the life of a kid going through puberty. Encourage them to express both the funny and serious moments.

  • Journaling:

Ask the student to write a journal entry about how they feel about growing up. They can express their thoughts, fears, and excitement about the changes they are experiencing or will experience.

  • Movement Activity:

Engage in a fun physical activity, like a dance or exercise routine, to demonstrate how our bodies change and grow. Discuss how physical activity can help during puberty.

  • Role Play:

Set up a role-playing scenario where the student can practice talking about puberty with a friend or family member. This can help them feel more comfortable discussing the topic.

Talking Points

  • "Puberty is a time when your body starts to change as you grow up. It's completely normal!"
  • "You might notice that you grow taller, and your body may start to look different. This is your body preparing for adulthood!"
  • "Sometimes, you might feel a bit moody or emotional. That's because your hormones are changing, and it's okay to feel that way!"
  • "It's important to talk about these changes with someone you trust, like a parent or a teacher. They can help you understand what you're going through!"
  • "Remember, everyone goes through puberty at their own pace. It's perfectly fine to be different from your friends!"
