Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the concept of community, including the different roles people play and how they work together to make a place better. The student will also learn about their own community and think about ways they can contribute to it.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • Access to a quiet space for discussion and activities
  • Knowledge of the local community (parks, schools, shops, etc.)

Activities

  1. Community Map Creation:

The student will draw a map of their community, including important places like their home, school, parks, and shops. This will help them visualize where they live and the different aspects of their community.

  2. Role Play:

The student will choose a community role (like teacher, doctor, or shopkeeper) and act it out. This activity will help them understand what different people do to help the community.

  3. Community Helpers Discussion:

The student will talk about different helpers in their community and how those helpers make life better for everyone. This could be a conversation where the student lists people they see every day.

  4. Kindness Project:

The student will think of one kind thing they can do for someone in their community, like drawing a picture for a neighbor or helping a family member. They will plan how to do it and why it’s important.
