Objective

By the end of this lesson, Destinie will learn about different types of flowers, their significance in various states, and how to express her creativity through art while enhancing her English and math skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper (any kind)
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (optional)
  • Books or printouts about flowers and states (optional)
  • Basic math tools (like a ruler for measuring)

Before the lesson, gather information about different flowers and the states they are associated with. Prepare a list of flowers and their states for reference.

Activities

  • Flower Research:

Destinie will choose her favorite flower and research where it is commonly found in the United States. She can write a few sentences about it in her own words.

  • Art Project:

Using colored pencils or crayons, Destinie will create a drawing of her chosen flower. She can also draw the state it represents, incorporating elements of that state's landscape.

  • Math Measurement:

Destinie will use a ruler to measure her drawing's dimensions. She can practice addition by calculating the total length and width of her artwork.

  • Story Time:

Destinie will write a short story or poem about her flower, including why she likes it and what it represents in her chosen state.

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that flowers can tell us a lot about different states? What flower do you want to learn about?"
  • "Flowers come in many colors and shapes! What colors do you think your flower will have?"
  • "When we measure our artwork, we can learn about sizes. How long do you think your drawing will be?"
  • "Writing stories helps us share our thoughts. What would you like to say about your flower?"
  • "Some flowers are special to certain states. Can you think of a flower that might be important to your state?"
  • "Art is a way to express ourselves. How do you feel when you draw?"
  • "Math is everywhere, even in art! Can you find the total size of your drawing?"
