Objective

By the end of this lesson, Zayn will understand the basic concepts of English, Math, Physical Education, and Science related to the idea of going to work with Mom. He will be able to express his thoughts in writing, solve simple math problems, engage in physical activities, and learn about the science behind work environments.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for writing and math.
  • A timer (could be a phone or clock) for physical activities.
  • A comfortable space for physical activities.
  • Open space for discussion and activities.

Activities

  1. Creative Writing: Zayn will write a short story about a day in the life of going to work with Mom. He can include what they do, who they meet, and what he learns. Encourage him to use descriptive words!

  2. Math at Work: Create a small math problem based on a scenario at work. For example, if Mom sells 5 items every hour, how many items does she sell in 4 hours? Zayn will solve the problem and explain his reasoning.

  3. Physical Activity Break: Set up a mini obstacle course in the yard or living room. Zayn can pretend he’s navigating through a busy office or factory, jumping over “files” and crawling under “desks.”

  4. Science Discussion: Talk about what makes a good work environment. Discuss things like light, space, and tools. Zayn can draw a picture of his ideal workspace and label the different parts.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think a typical day at work looks like?"
  • "Can you think of a math problem that could happen at work? For example, if you have 10 apples and give away 3, how many do you have left?"
  • "Why do you think physical activity is important even when people are working? How can we stay active?"
  • "What are some things that make a workspace comfortable and fun? Can you draw your own dream workspace?"
