Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand basic financial concepts such as saving, budgeting, and the importance of making informed spending decisions. The student will also learn how to create a simple budget and understand the value of money management.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper for note-taking and calculations
  • Calculator (optional, if the student prefers to use one)
  • Colorful markers or crayons for creative activities
  • Printed templates for a simple budget (can be drawn on paper if printing is not an option)

Before the lesson, it would be helpful to familiarize yourself with basic financial terms such as income, expenses, savings, and budgeting. This will help guide the discussion and activities.

Activities

  • Budget Creation: The student will create a simple monthly budget using a template. They will list their expected income (allowance, gifts) and expenses (snacks, games, etc.), learning how to allocate their money wisely.
  • Saving Challenge: The student will set a savings goal for something they want to buy and create a plan on how to save for it. They will track their progress over a week or month.
  • Spending Scenarios: The student will be given various spending scenarios (e.g., a birthday party, a new video game) and will discuss how they would budget for each scenario, considering what is a want versus a need.
  • Fun Financial Quiz: Create a quiz with fun questions about money management and financial literacy to reinforce what they have learned during the lesson.
