Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of rock climbing and bouldering, including safety practices, techniques for climbing, and how to have fun while being active outdoors.

Materials and Prep

  • A safe outdoor climbing area or a large bouldering rock
  • Comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes
  • Water bottle for hydration
  • First aid kit (for safety)
  • Knowledge of basic climbing safety rules (to be discussed beforehand)

Activities

  • Warm-Up Stretching

Start with some fun stretching exercises to warm up the body. This can include reaching for the sky, touching toes, and doing side bends. Make it a game by counting how many stretches you can do in one minute!

  • Climbing Techniques Practice

Practice different climbing techniques on a bouldering rock. Focus on how to place feet and hands, and try to climb to different heights. You can pretend to be a monkey or a superhero while climbing!

  • Safety First Game

Discuss and practice safety rules. Create a fun game where you act out what to do in case of a fall or how to help a friend who needs assistance. This can involve role-playing scenarios to make it engaging.

  • Mini Climbing Challenge

Set up a mini climbing challenge where the student can try to reach the top of a bouldering rock. Time them and encourage them to beat their own record. Celebrate their achievements with high-fives!

  • Cool Down and Reflection

Finish the lesson with a cool-down session. Sit together, drink water, and talk about what was fun and what they learned. Maybe even draw a picture of their favorite climbing moment!

Talking Points

  • "Climbing is not just about strength; it's also about using your brain to figure out the best way to go up!"
  • "Always remember to check your surroundings and make sure it's safe before you start climbing!"
  • "Using your legs is super important! They are stronger than your arms for climbing!"
  • "If you fall, it's okay! Just remember to fall safely and roll if you can!"
  • "Climbing with friends is more fun! You can cheer each other on!"
  • "Every time you climb, you're getting better and stronger. Keep practicing!"
  • "What was your favorite part of climbing today? Let's talk about it!"
