Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic concepts of plants, including their parts and how they grow.
Materials and Prep
- Plant seeds (e.g. bean or sunflower seeds)
- Potting soil
- Small pots or containers
- Water
- Chart paper or whiteboard
- Markers or chalk
Activities
-
Planting Seeds:
1. Begin by discussing the different parts of a plant, such as roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits.
2. Give each student a small pot or container filled with potting soil.
3. Show the students how to make a small hole in the soil using their finger or a pencil.
4. Have the students place a seed in the hole and cover it gently with soil.
5. Instruct them to water the soil lightly.
6. Explain that they need to place their pots near a sunny window or outside in a safe spot.
-
Observing Growth:
1. After planting the seeds, encourage the students to observe their pots daily.
2. Discuss the changes they notice, such as the sprouting of the seed, growth of roots and stems, and the appearance of leaves.
3. Remind them to water their plants regularly and record their observations in a journal or notebook.
-
Reviewing Plant Parts:
1. Use chart paper or a whiteboard to draw a simple diagram of a plant.
2. Label the different parts of the plant and discuss their functions.
3. Have the students take turns identifying the parts and explaining their roles.
