Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create their own lantern using simple materials. They will learn about the importance of light, explore their creativity, and develop fine motor skills through crafting.
Materials and Prep
- Paper (any color)
- Scissors
- Glue or tape
- Markers or crayons
- String or ribbon (optional for hanging)
- Battery-operated tea light (optional for safety)
Before the lesson, make sure to have a clean workspace ready for crafting. Explain to the student that we will be making a lantern that can hold light safely!
Activities
-
Design the Lantern:
Start by letting the student choose a piece of paper and design their lantern on it. They can draw patterns, shapes, or even their favorite characters. Encourage them to think about how they want their lantern to look!
-
Cut and Fold:
Once the design is ready, guide the student to cut the paper into a strip and fold it into a lantern shape. This will help improve their scissor skills and hand-eye coordination.
-
Decorate:
After the lantern is shaped, let them decorate it with markers or crayons. They can add stickers or other embellishments if available. This is where their creativity really shines!
-
Add Light:
If you have a battery-operated tea light, place it inside the lantern. If not, they can pretend their lantern is lit. Discuss how lanterns are used to bring light in dark places.
Talking Points
- "What do you think a lantern is used for?"
- "Can you tell me how we can make our lantern special?"
- "Why do you think we use light in the dark?"
- "How does your lantern make you feel when you see it lit up?"
- "What colors did you choose for your lantern? Why?"
- "What will you do with your lantern once it's finished?"
