Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of cooking on a campfire, including safety tips, how to prepare simple campfire meals, and the fun of cooking outdoors!
Materials and Prep
- Wood for the campfire
- Matches or a lighter (to be used by an adult only)
- A safe fire pit or designated campfire area
- Skewers (wooden or metal, depending on availability)
- Marshmallows, hot dogs, or vegetables (like bell peppers and zucchini)
- Aluminum foil
- Cooking gloves (for safety)
- Water for safety and cleaning
Before starting, ensure that you have a safe area for the campfire and that an adult will supervise the fire at all times.
Activities
-
Setting Up the Campfire:
With adult supervision, gather wood and start building a safe campfire. Discuss the importance of fire safety, such as keeping a bucket of water nearby.
-
Cooking Marshmallows:
Use skewers to roast marshmallows over the fire. Talk about how heat cooks food and how to tell when the marshmallow is ready (golden brown!).
-
Making Campfire Hot Dogs:
Skewer hot dogs and cook them over the fire. Discuss the different ways we can cook food and how fire changes the food's taste.
-
Foil Pack Veggies:
Wrap chopped vegetables in aluminum foil and place them near the fire to cook. This teaches about cooking with heat and the importance of wrapping food to keep it safe!
Talking Points
- "What do you think fire needs to burn? Yes! It needs wood and air!"
- "Why do we have to be careful around fire? That's right! Fire can be very hot and can hurt us!"
- "How does cooking on a campfire make food taste different? Exactly! The smoke and heat change the flavors!"
- "Can you think of other foods we could cook over a campfire? Great ideas! Like corn or even pizza!"
- "What happens to marshmallows when we roast them? Yes! They get all melty and yummy!"
- "Why do we use foil for cooking veggies? Good thinking! It keeps them safe and helps them cook evenly!"
