Objective

By the end of this lesson, Isaac will understand the process of apple picking, including the types of apples, their growth cycle, and the importance of orchards in our ecosystem. He will also gain hands-on experience in picking apples and learn how to choose the best ones for eating or cooking.

Materials and Prep

  • Comfortable clothing and shoes for outdoor activity
  • Reusable bags or baskets for collecting apples
  • Water bottle for hydration
  • Notebook and pencil for taking notes
  • Camera or smartphone for capturing the experience

Before the trip, research local apple orchards and check their picking schedule. Make sure to call ahead to confirm they are open for picking and to inquire about any specific rules or guidelines.

Activities

  • Apple Orchard Tour

Start the day with a guided tour of the apple orchard. This will give Isaac an overview of the different types of apples grown, how they are cultivated, and the importance of sustainable farming practices.

  • Apple Picking Challenge

Engage in a fun apple-picking challenge where Isaac can compete against himself to see how many apples he can pick in a certain amount of time. This will make the activity more exciting and encourage him to learn about the best picking techniques.

  • Apple Taste Test

After picking, conduct a taste test of different apple varieties. Isaac can rate each type on taste, texture, and sweetness, which will help him learn to differentiate between them.

  • Apple Recipe Planning

Discuss and plan a recipe using the apples he picked. This could be a simple apple pie, apple sauce, or even a fresh apple salad. This will connect the experience of picking apples to cooking and nutrition.

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that there are over 7,500 varieties of apples grown around the world? Let's see how many we can find today!"
  • "Apple trees typically take about 4 to 5 years to start producing fruit. Can you imagine waiting that long for a snack?"
  • "When picking apples, always look for ones that are firm and have a rich color. A good apple should feel heavy for its size!"
  • "Orchards play a vital role in our ecosystem by providing habitats for wildlife and helping to improve air quality. Why do you think that is?"
  • "Have you ever thought about how many recipes we can make with apples? From pies to cider, apples are super versatile!"
