By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of survival in the Nevada desert, including identifying edible plants, finding water sources, and creating shelter. The student will also learn essential skills to stay safe and navigate in a desert environment.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pencil for notes
  • Map of the Nevada desert (can be drawn or printed)
  • List of common desert plants (can be written down)
  • Water bottle (to discuss hydration importance)
  • Blanket or tarp (for shelter activity)

Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with common desert plants and survival techniques. Make sure to choose a safe outdoor space for activities if possible.

Activities

  • Plant Identification Walk:

Take a walk outside and look for plants that might be found in the Nevada desert. Use the list of common desert plants to identify any you see. Discuss which ones are edible and which to avoid.

  • Water Source Hunt:

Discuss the importance of water in the desert. Have the student brainstorm and draw potential water sources they might find in the desert, like streams or cacti. Talk about how to collect and purify water.

  • Build a Shelter:

Using a blanket or tarp, have the student create a simple shelter that could protect them from the sun. Discuss what makes a good shelter and why it’s important in a desert environment.
