Objective
By the end of this lesson, Leon will understand the importance of perseverance, learn how to apply it in his daily life, and recognize that challenges can be overcome with determination and effort.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and colored pencils or markers
- A timer or stopwatch (optional)
- Space to move around for physical activities
- Notebook for reflection
Before the lesson, prepare some examples of famous people who demonstrated perseverance, such as Thomas Edison or J.K. Rowling. Think about personal experiences where perseverance helped you or someone you know.
Activities
-
Story Time:
Read a short story or a biography about a person who showed great perseverance. Discuss what challenges they faced and how they overcame them.
-
Perseverance Art:
Have Leon draw a picture representing perseverance. This could be a mountain to climb, a plant growing through concrete, or a superhero overcoming obstacles. Encourage him to use bright colors and express his feelings through art.
-
Obstacle Course:
Create a simple obstacle course in the backyard or living room. Challenge Leon to complete it multiple times, encouraging him to keep trying even if he falls or stumbles. Discuss how each attempt helps him improve.
-
Reflection Journal:
At the end of the lesson, have Leon write in his notebook about a time when he had to persevere. What was the challenge? How did he feel? What did he learn from it?
Talking Points
- "Perseverance means not giving up, even when things get tough!"
- "Can you think of a time when you had to keep trying? How did it feel to finally succeed?"
- "Famous people like Thomas Edison failed many times before they succeeded. He said, 'I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.' What do you think he meant?"
- "Every time you try again after failing, you are getting closer to your goal. It's like building muscles; the more you practice, the stronger you get!"
- "Remember, it's okay to ask for help when you're struggling. Even superheroes have sidekicks!"
