Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and describe the basic needs of living things, including plants and animals. They will understand how these needs are met in their environment and be able to explain the importance of each need for survival.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • Access to a garden or outdoor space (if available)
  • Internet access for videos (optional)
  • Knowledge of local plants and animals

Activities

  1. Nature Walk

Take a short walk outside to observe plants and animals. Encourage the student to look for different types of living things and discuss what they see. Ask questions like, "What do you think this plant needs to grow?"

  2. Draw Your Favorite Living Thing

After the nature walk, have the student draw their favorite plant or animal. They can label the drawing with what that living thing needs to survive, such as sunlight, water, and food.

  3. Story Time

Read a short story about a plant or animal and discuss its needs. Ask the student to think about how the character in the story meets those needs. This could be a fictional story or a non-fiction resource.

  4. Needs of Living Things Chart

Create a chart together listing the needs of living things. Include categories like air, water, food, and shelter. Discuss how each need is important for survival.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think living things need to survive? Let's make a list!"
  • "Plants need sunlight and water. Can you think of why that is?"
  • "Animals need food and shelter. What do you think happens if they don't have these?"
  • "Every living thing has a special place where it can find what it needs. Where do you think this plant or animal finds its needs?"
  • "We can help living things by taking care of their environment. What can we do to help?"
