Objective

By the end of this lesson, the homeschool student will be able to analyze and comprehend football-related reading material, and apply reading strategies to enhance their understanding and enjoyment of the sport.

Materials and Prep

  • Football-related books, articles, or magazines

Prior knowledge of basic football terminology and rules is helpful but not required.

Activities

  1. Warm-up: Read a football-related article or book excerpt together. Encourage the student to ask questions and discuss any unfamiliar terms or concepts.

  2. Reading Comprehension: Ask the student to read a short passage about a famous football player or a memorable football game. After reading, have them summarize the main points and share their thoughts or reactions.

  3. Visualization Exercise: Choose a football play or strategy and ask the student to imagine it vividly in their mind. Have them describe the scene, players' movements, and any specific details they can visualize.

  4. Writing Prompts: Provide the student with writing prompts related to football, such as "Describe your favorite football moment" or "Imagine you are a football player, write a letter to your coach explaining your strategy for an upcoming game." Encourage creativity and storytelling.

  5. Research Project (optional): If the student is interested, assign them a research project on a specific football team, player, or historical football event. Guide them in finding reliable sources and organizing their findings into a short report or presentation.
