Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic concept of steam engines, how they work, and their importance in history. The student will also explore the fun and exciting world of steam engine shows!
Materials and Prep
- Paper and crayons or markers for drawing
- A timer or stopwatch (can be a phone or clock)
- A comfortable space for storytelling and activities
- Knowledge about the basic parts of a steam engine (boiler, piston, etc.)
Activities
-
Steam Engine Drawing:
Have the student draw their own version of a steam engine. Encourage them to be creative and add fun details like smoke coming out of the chimney!
-
Steam Engine Story Time:
Tell a story about how steam engines changed the world. Include fun facts and characters like engineers and train conductors. Ask questions to keep the student engaged!
-
Steam Engine Race:
Using a timer, have the student pretend to be a steam engine. They can set a timer and see how fast they can "chug" across the room, making steam sounds as they go!
-
Steam Show Presentation:
Have the student prepare a short presentation about steam engines. They can use their drawing as a prop and share what they learned with you. Encourage them to be enthusiastic!
