Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills while having fun with Pokemon!
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil
- Pokemon cards (optional)
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Pokemon Addition
Choose two Pokemon cards and write down the numbers on each card. Add the numbers together to find the total. For example, if the first card has 3 and the second card has 5, the sum would be 8.
-
Activity 2: Pokemon Subtraction
Select two Pokemon cards and write down the numbers on each card. Subtract the smaller number from the larger number. For instance, if the first card has 9 and the second card has 4, the difference would be 5.
-
Activity 3: Pokemon Counting
Take a set of Pokemon cards and count how many cards there are. Write down the total number. Then, count how many cards of a specific type (e.g., fire type, water type) are in the set and write down the count. Practice counting different types of Pokemon cards and compare the totals.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to learn about arithmetic while using Pokemon cards!"
- "Arithmetic is all about numbers and doing calculations with them."
- "We can use addition to find the total of two numbers. For example, if we have 3 Pokemon cards and add 5 more, we would have 8 cards in total!"
- "Subtraction helps us find the difference between two numbers. If we have 9 Pokemon cards and we give away 4, we would have 5 cards left."
- "Counting is important in arithmetic. We can count how many Pokemon cards we have in total and also how many cards of a specific type we have."
- "Remember, arithmetic is fun and useful in many everyday situations!"
