Objective

By the end of this lesson, Sawyer will have a better understanding of the historical context of the Ghosts of Tabor, including the significance of the Tabor area, the stories surrounding its ghosts, and how these tales connect to larger themes in history, science, and social studies. Sawyer will also improve his skills in reading comprehension, critical thinking, and creative expression.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pencils
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (if available)
  • Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, paper)
  • Books or online articles about the history of Tabor and ghost stories
  • Optional: flashlight for a "ghost hunt" activity

Before starting the lesson, ensure that Sawyer has a basic understanding of what ghosts are and why people tell ghost stories. It might be helpful to discuss any local ghost stories he already knows.

Activities

  • Ghost Story Research:

Sawyer will research the history of Tabor, focusing on the ghost stories associated with the area. He can look for articles, books, or videos that tell the tales of the ghosts. This will help him understand the historical context of these stories.

  • Create a Ghost Character:

After learning about the ghost stories, Sawyer will create his own ghost character. He will write a short backstory for the ghost, including how it came to be a ghost and what it wants. This will encourage creative thinking and writing skills.

  • Ghost Hunt Adventure:

If safe and possible, Sawyer can go on a "ghost hunt" in his home or backyard with a flashlight. He can document any "spooky" findings or feelings he has during the hunt, encouraging him to think critically about his experiences.

  • Artistic Expression:

Sawyer will create a drawing or painting of his ghost character or a scene from the Tabor ghost stories. This will allow him to express what he learned through art.
