Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand basic addition and subtraction concepts through fun activities inspired by the beloved characters and adventures from Bluey. The student will also practice counting and simple problem-solving skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for writing down math problems
  • Crayons or colored pencils for coloring
  • A timer or stopwatch (optional for timed games)
  • Bluey episodes or knowledge of the characters (to relate activities)

Before the lesson, make sure to have a few episodes of Bluey in mind to reference during activities. Familiarity with the characters will make the lesson more engaging!

Activities

  • Bluey’s Counting Adventure:

Ask the student to count how many times Bluey and Bingo jump in a specific episode. Write down the number and then create simple addition problems based on that number. For example, “If Bluey jumps 4 times and Bingo jumps 3 times, how many jumps did they make together?”

  • Subtraction with Bluey:

Using a drawing of Bluey and Bingo, have the student create a scene where they have 10 toys. Then, ask them to draw or erase some toys to represent subtraction. For example, “If Bluey has 10 toys and gives 3 to Bingo, how many toys does Bluey have left?”

  • Bluey’s Math Relay:

Set up a relay race where the student has to solve a math problem at each station before moving to the next. Each problem can be themed around Bluey’s adventures, such as “If Bluey found 5 sticks and then found 2 more, how many sticks does she have now?”

  • Colorful Math Art:

Have the student create a Bluey character using crayons or colored pencils. As they draw, ask them to count the colors they use and create simple addition problems based on how many of each color they have used.

Talking Points

  • “Did you know that math is like a game? Just like Bluey and Bingo play games, we can play with numbers!”
  • “When we add, we are putting things together, just like when Bluey and Bingo team up for an adventure!”
  • “Subtraction is like when Bluey shares her toys with Bingo. If she gives some away, we can find out how many she has left!”
  • “Counting is super important! Every time Bluey jumps, we can count how many times she jumps. Let’s count together!”
  • “Math can be colorful! Just like Bluey’s world, we can use colors to help us understand numbers better!”
  • “What do you think happens when we solve a math problem? It’s like solving a mystery in one of Bluey’s episodes!”
  • “Remember, it’s okay to make mistakes in math! Just like Bluey learns from her adventures, we learn from our mistakes too!”
