Objective

By the end of this lesson, Deacon will learn about the Plymouth 17th century village, including the daily life of the Pilgrims, their interactions with Native Americans, and the significance of the first Thanksgiving. He will be able to describe what life was like during that time and share interesting facts about the Pilgrims.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper for note-taking and drawing
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (if needed)
  • Props for pretend play (optional): a hat or scarf, small basket, etc.
  • Space for activities (a table or floor area)

Activities

  • Story Time: Read a short story or watch a video about the Pilgrims' journey to America. Afterward, discuss what Deacon found most interesting.
  • Role Play: Pretend to be a Pilgrim or a Native American. Deacon can use props to act out a day in the life of a person living in Plymouth. This can include planting crops, fishing, or trading goods.
  • Thanksgiving Feast Planning: Have Deacon plan a pretend Thanksgiving feast. He can draw a menu of foods the Pilgrims might have eaten, like corn, fish, and turkey.
  • Craft Time: Create a simple craft, such as a paper cornucopia or a Pilgrim hat, to represent the harvest and the Thanksgiving celebration.

  • "Did you know that the Pilgrims came to America on a ship called the Mayflower? It was a very long journey!"

  • "The Pilgrims were very thankful for their new home and the help they received. What are you thankful for?"
  • "Let's think about what foods we eat today that might be similar to what the Pilgrims had. Can you name any?"
