Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and categorize nouns, understand the difference between common and proper nouns, and use them in simple sentences.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • A timer (optional)
  • Space to work comfortably

Before the lesson, make sure to explain what nouns are in simple terms. Prepare a few examples of nouns that the student can relate to, like "dog," "school," and "Emily."

Activities

  • Noun Hunt: Go around the house or yard and find 5 different nouns. The student can draw or write down what they find. This will help them see nouns in their everyday environment.
  • Noun Categories: Create two columns on a piece of paper: one for common nouns and one for proper nouns. Ask the student to think of examples for each category and write them down. You can help them by giving hints.
  • Sentence Creation: Ask the student to pick one common noun and one proper noun. Then, have them create a silly sentence using both. For example, "The dog named Max loves to dance!"
  • Draw a Noun: Let the student choose their favorite noun and draw a picture of it. Encourage them to add details and color to make it fun!

Talking Points

  • "What is a noun? A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea!"
  • "Can you think of a person? Maybe your friend or a family member? That's a noun!"
  • "How about a place? Your school or your favorite park? Those are nouns too!"
  • "Now, let's think of things! A toy, a book, or even a pizza! Those are all nouns!"
  • "Do you know what a proper noun is? It's a special name for a person, place, or thing, like 'Emily' or 'Paris'!"
  • "Common nouns are general names like 'city' or 'teacher.' They are not special names!"
  • "Let's use nouns in sentences! Can you make a silly sentence with a noun? I can't wait to hear it!"
