Objective

By the end of this lesson, Omolara will be able to distinguish between proper and common nouns, identify examples of each, and use them correctly in sentences. This understanding will enhance her vocabulary and writing skills, making her more confident in her use of the English language.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil or pen
  • Markers or colored pencils (optional)
  • Whiteboard or large sheet of paper (optional for visual aid)

Before the lesson, it’s helpful to have a basic understanding of nouns. Common nouns refer to general items or people, while proper nouns are specific names of people, places, or organizations. Prepare some examples of both types of nouns to share with Omolara.

Activities

  • Noun Hunt:

Go on a noun hunt around the house or yard. Omolara can write down common nouns she finds (like 'dog', 'tree', 'book') and proper nouns (like 'Luna' for the dog, 'Maple' for the tree, 'Harry Potter' for the book). This activity will help her see real-life examples of both types of nouns.

  • Noun Sorting Game:

Create two columns on a piece of paper or use a whiteboard. Label one column "Common Nouns" and the other "Proper Nouns." Omolara can write or draw examples under each category. This visual sorting will help her understand the differences between the two types of nouns.

  • Sentence Creation:

Challenge Omolara to write five sentences using both common and proper nouns. Encourage her to be creative! For example, "The dog named Luna played in the park." This will reinforce her understanding of how these nouns work in context.

Talking Points

  • "A common noun is a general name for a person, place, thing, or idea. For example, 'city' or 'teacher'."
  • "A proper noun is the specific name of a person, place, or organization, and it always starts with a capital letter. For example, 'New York' or 'Ms. Smith'."
  • "Think of common nouns as the category and proper nouns as the specific examples within that category."
  • "When writing, it's important to know which type of noun to use to convey your message clearly."
  • "Can you find some common nouns in your favorite story? What are the proper nouns in that story?"
