Objective

By the end of this lesson, Omolara will be able to identify at least ten countries and their capitals, understand the significance of each capital, and appreciate the diversity of cultures around the world.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil or pen
  • Markers or colored pencils
  • A world map (drawn or printed)
  • Access to a globe or an online map (if available)

Before starting the lesson, it would be helpful to have a basic understanding of what a country and capital city are, as well as a few examples to discuss.

Activities

  • Country and Capital Matching Game

    Write down the names of ten countries on one piece of paper and their capitals on another. Mix them up and challenge Omolara to match each country with its capital. This will help reinforce her memory.

  • Map Coloring Activity

    Using the world map, have Omolara color in the countries she learns about. She can use different colors for different continents or even create a legend to show which countries she has studied.

  • Country Fact Sheet

    For each country, Omolara can create a fact sheet that includes the capital, the language spoken, a famous landmark, and a fun fact. This will encourage her to research and learn more about each country.

  • Capital City Quiz

    At the end of the lesson, conduct a fun quiz where you ask Omolara to name the capitals of the countries you've discussed. Offer small rewards for correct answers to keep it engaging!
