Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will create a beautiful fall-themed art project that captures the colors and essence of September. They will explore their creativity through various activities while learning about the significance of autumn.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper (any size)
  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • Leaves (collected from outside, if possible)
  • Glue (if available)
  • Scissors (for older students, with supervision)
  • Optional: A camera or phone to take pictures of their artwork

Before starting the lesson, remind the student to gather any leaves they can find outside. Discuss the colors of fall and what makes this season special.

Activities

  • Leaf Rubbing:

Place a leaf under a sheet of paper and rub crayon over it to create a beautiful leaf print. Experiment with different leaves and colors!

  • Fall Scene Drawing:

Encourage the student to draw their version of a fall scene. They can include trees, pumpkins, and animals. Use lots of warm colors like orange, red, and yellow!

  • Collage Creation:

If glue is available, create a collage using the collected leaves. Arrange them on the paper and glue them down to make a colorful fall display.

  • Nature Walk and Photo Journal:

Take a short walk outside to observe the changes in nature. If possible, take photos of interesting leaves, trees, or fall decorations to create a photo journal.

Talking Points

  • "What colors do you see in the leaves during fall? Can you name them?"
  • "Why do you think leaves change color in autumn? It’s like nature’s way of getting ready for winter!"
  • "How does the weather change in September? What activities do you enjoy during this time?"
  • "Can you think of any animals that get ready for winter in the fall? Let’s draw them in our scenes!"
  • "What is your favorite part of fall? Is it the colors, the weather, or maybe something else?"
  • "How can we use art to express what we feel about the fall season?"
  • "What do you think makes a good fall art project? Is it the colors, the shapes, or the feelings it gives you?"
  • "How does creating art make you feel? Let's share our thoughts after we finish!"
  • "Would you like to create a fall art gallery at home to show off your projects?"
