Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify the main idea and supporting details in a short story, as well as create their own story using these concepts. This will help improve their reading comprehension and creative writing skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil or pen
  • Timer (optional for timed activities)
  • Imagination and creativity!

Before the lesson, the student should be familiar with the concepts of main idea and supporting details. If they need a refresher, a quick discussion about what these terms mean can be helpful.

Activities

  • Story Time

Read a short story together. After reading, discuss what the main idea of the story is and what details support that idea. This can be a fun way to practice listening and comprehension skills.

  • Main Idea Hunt

Give the student a few sentences from various stories. Ask them to identify the main idea and at least two supporting details for each. This encourages critical thinking and analysis.

  • Create Your Own Story

Have the student write their own short story. They should start by deciding on a main idea and then think of supporting details to help tell their story. This will help them practice their writing skills.

  • Story Sharing

Once the student has written their story, they can share it with you. Ask them to explain the main idea and the supporting details they included. This reinforces their understanding and builds confidence.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think the main idea of this story is? Remember, it's what the story is mostly about!"
  • "Can you find some details that support the main idea? These are the facts or events that help explain or back up the main idea!"
  • "When you write your own story, think about what message you want to share. What is the main idea?"
  • "Supporting details are like building blocks for your story. They help make your main idea stronger!"
  • "Sharing your story is a great way to show what you've learned! Can you tell me your main idea and some details?"
