Objective

By the end of this week-long lesson plan, the student will understand the responsibilities and skills required to be a dog walker and sitter. They will learn about dog care, safety, and how to communicate effectively with pet owners.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research
  • Printed worksheets for daily activities (can be created by the student)
  • Dog care guidelines (can be written or printed from reliable sources)
  • Access to a friendly dog (if possible) for hands-on practice

Before starting the lesson, ensure the student is familiar with basic dog behavior and has access to a safe environment for any activities involving dogs.

Activities

  • Dog Care Basics

Research and create a list of essential care tips for dogs, including feeding, grooming, and exercise needs. The student can present their findings to a family member or friend.

  • Dog Walking Simulation

Set up a mock dog walking route in the neighborhood or backyard. The student can practice walking with a stuffed animal or a friendly dog, focusing on how to handle the leash and keep the dog safe.

  • Creating a Dog Sitting Schedule

Have the student design a weekly schedule for a pretend dog sitting job. They should include feeding times, playtime, and walks, and discuss how to manage their time effectively.

  • Role-Playing Scenarios

Engage in role-playing exercises where the student acts as a dog walker or sitter and a family member acts as a pet owner. This will help them practice communication skills and how to answer common questions from pet owners.

  • Dog Safety Workshop

Discuss and create a list of safety tips for dog walking and sitting. The student can learn about recognizing signs of stress in dogs and how to handle different situations that may arise.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think are the most important things to remember when taking care of a dog?"
  • "Why is it important to know a dog's personality before walking or sitting for them?"
  • "Can you name some common commands that dogs should know? How can these help you?"
  • "What should you do if a dog seems scared or aggressive while you’re walking it?"
  • "How can you make sure both you and the dog are safe during a walk?"
  • "Why is it important to communicate clearly with pet owners about their dog's needs?"
