Objective

By the end of this lesson, Carley will have a better understanding of the praying mantis's role in the ecosystem, its hunting behavior, and how it relates to other living things. She will also practice her observation and discussion skills while enhancing her vocabulary in English.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook or journal for writing observations
  • Pencil or pen for taking notes
  • Access to a safe outdoor area to observe live insects
  • Optional: A camera or smartphone for taking pictures (if available)

Before the lesson, make sure to find a safe outdoor space where Carley can observe insects without disturbing them too much. Familiarize yourself with the basic anatomy and behavior of the praying mantis to guide the discussion.

Activities

  • Observation Walk:

Take a walk in a garden or park and look for praying mantises and other insects. Encourage Carley to observe their behavior, noting how they move and interact with their environment.

  • Drawing and Labeling:

After observing, Carley can draw a praying mantis and label its parts (like head, thorax, abdomen, and legs). This will help her understand the anatomy of the insect better.

  • Discussion Time:

After the observation and drawing, have a discussion about what Carley saw. Ask her questions like, "What did the mantis do?" and "How did it catch its food?" This will help her articulate her thoughts and observations.

  • Creative Writing:

Encourage Carley to write a short story or a poem about a day in the life of a praying mantis. This activity will combine her English skills with her scientific observations.

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that praying mantises are predators? They eat other insects, which helps control their population!"
  • "What do you think makes the praying mantis such a good hunter? Look at its long legs and how it can stay very still!"
  • "How do you think the praying mantis's color helps it in the wild? Can you think of other animals that use camouflage?"
  • "Why is it important for us to observe insects like the praying mantis? They play a big role in our ecosystem!"
  • "What was your favorite part of watching the praying mantis? Did you learn something new today?"
