Materials and Prep

  • Legos (various colors and sizes)
  • Number cards (0-10)
  • Counting cards (1-20)
  • Math symbols cards (+, -)
  • Large playing area (table or floor space)

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Building with Legos:

    • Ask the student to build towers using different numbers of Legos.
    • Encourage them to count the number of Legos used for each tower.
    • Discuss concepts of more and less, comparing the heights of different towers.
  2. Number recognition and counting:

    • Show the student number cards randomly and ask them to identify the numbers.
    • Use counting cards to practice counting objects using Legos.
    • Have the student count a specific number of Legos and match them with the corresponding number card.
  3. Basic arithmetic with Legos:

    • Introduce math symbols cards (+ and -).
    • Ask the student to create simple addition and subtraction equations using Legos.
    • Encourage them to solve the equations by adding or removing Legos accordingly.

Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • "Today, we are going to have fun learning math with Legos!"
  • "We will build towers with Legos and count how many Legos we used."
  • "We will learn about numbers by recognizing them on number cards and counting objects."
  • "We will also practice adding and subtracting using Legos and math symbol cards."
  • "Remember, math is all about numbers and solving problems. Let's have fun with Legos while learning!"
