Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to demonstrate basic roller skating skills, including balance, stopping, and gliding, while having fun and feeling confident on skates.

Materials and Prep

  • Roller skates
  • Helmet
  • Protective pads (knee and elbow pads)
  • Flat, open space (like a driveway or smooth floor)
  • Water bottle for hydration

Make sure the skates fit well and that the student is comfortable wearing the helmet and pads. Choose a safe area free from obstacles for skating.

Activities

  • Warm-Up Stretching

Start with some fun stretches to warm up the body. Stretch the arms, legs, and back while singing a silly song to make it more enjoyable!

  • Balance Practice

Have the student stand still on skates and practice balancing. Encourage them to lift one foot off the ground for a few seconds while holding onto a wall or railing for support.

  • Gliding Around

Once they feel balanced, let them glide slowly across the flat surface. Encourage them to push off with one foot and glide on the other, focusing on smooth movements.

  • Stopping Practice

Teach the student how to stop safely by using the toe stop on the skates. Have them practice coming to a stop from a slow glide, using a fun countdown like "3, 2, 1, STOP!"

  • Fun Roller Skating Games

End the lesson with some fun games like "Follow the Leader" where the student mimics your movements or a simple race to see how fast they can glide safely!

Talking Points

  • "Great job! Remember to keep your knees slightly bent to help you balance!"
  • "Look straight ahead while you skate. It helps you stay steady!"
  • "When you want to stop, press down on your toe stops. It's like putting on the brakes!"
  • "If you feel wobbly, just hold on to something until you feel strong again!"
  • "Skating is all about having fun! Let's enjoy every glide and spin!"
