Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will learn basic roller skating skills, including balancing, gliding, and stopping safely. The student will also have fun while improving their physical coordination and confidence on skates.
Materials and Prep
- Roller skates (properly fitted for the student)
- Protective gear (helmet, knee pads, elbow pads)
- Open space for skating (preferably a flat, smooth surface)
- Water bottle for hydration
Before the lesson, ensure that the roller skates and protective gear are in good condition and properly fitted. Choose a safe area free from obstacles for the skating activities.
Activities
- Warm-Up Dance:
Start with a fun warm-up dance! Play some upbeat music and let the student move around in their skates, dancing and getting comfortable with the feeling of skating.
- Balance Practice:
Have the student practice balancing on one foot while holding onto a wall or railing. Encourage them to switch feet and see how long they can balance without holding on.
- Gliding Games:
Set up a small course with cones (or any markers) and have the student practice gliding from one marker to the next. Celebrate their progress as they glide smoothly!
- Stopping Practice:
Teach the student how to stop safely by using the "T-stop" technique. Have them practice stopping by dragging one foot behind them while skating.
- Fun Skating Challenge:
Finish the lesson with a fun challenge! Set a timer and see how many laps the student can skate around a designated area. Cheer them on and make it exciting!
