Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify turtles in their natural habitat, observe their movements, and create drawings that capture their features and environment.
Materials and Prep
- Sketchbook or drawing paper
- Pencil or drawing utensil
- Comfortable clothes for outdoor exploration
- Water bottle for hydration
- Optional: A camera or smartphone to take pictures of turtles (if available)
Before the lesson, make sure to choose a safe creek location where turtles are known to live. Check the weather to ensure a pleasant day for outdoor exploration!
Activities
-
Explore the Creek: Take a walk along the creek and look for turtles basking on rocks or swimming in the water. Observe their surroundings, such as plants and other wildlife.
-
Sketching Turtles: Once a turtle is found, sit quietly and draw it in your sketchbook. Pay attention to its shape, colors, and any unique markings.
-
Movement Observation: Watch how the turtles move in and out of the water. Note their swimming style and how they use their legs to crawl on land.
-
Habitat Notes: Write down notes about the turtle's habitat. What plants are nearby? Is the water clear or muddy? How does the environment help the turtle survive?
Talking Points
- "Turtles are reptiles, and they have a hard shell that protects them. Can you think of any other animals that have shells?"
- "Do you know how turtles move? They can swim really well, but they also crawl on land. Let's watch how they do it!"
- "The creek is a special place for turtles. Why do you think they like to live here? What do you see around us that helps them?"
- "When we draw, we can capture what we see. What colors do you notice on the turtle? How does it blend in with its environment?"
- "Remember to be quiet and patient. Turtles can be shy. What do you think will happen if we make too much noise?"
