Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to tell time accurately and create a daily schedule for characters from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The student will also practice plotting these times on a dry erase clock, enhancing their understanding of time management and time telling.
Materials and Prep
- Dry erase clock
- Whiteboard or dry erase board
- Markers
- Printed character names and activities from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
- Timer or clock for demonstration
Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with the main characters and events from the book. Prepare a list of activities that the characters might do throughout their day.
Activities
- Create Character Schedules:
The student will choose 3-4 characters from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and create a daily schedule for each character. They will decide what activities the characters would do and at what times. For example, Harry might have breakfast at 8:00 AM, attend a class at 9:00 AM, and so on.
- Plotting Time on the Clock:
Once the schedules are created, the student will use the dry erase clock to plot each activity's time. They will practice moving the clock hands to show the correct times for each scheduled activity.
- Time Telling Relay:
To reinforce telling time, the student can play a relay game where they call out a time, and you have to move the clock hands to match it. Then, switch roles! This encourages active participation and fun.
Talking Points
- "What time do you think Harry wakes up? Let's think about what he might do first!"
- "When we plot the time on the clock, we need to remember that the short hand shows the hour and the long hand shows the minutes!"
- "Can you tell me what time it is when we have lunch? Let's find that time on our dry erase clock!"
- "Why do you think it's important for characters to have a schedule? How does it help them?"
- "Let's practice moving the clock hands together! What time should we set for our next activity?"
