Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a basic understanding of the Renaissance period, its culture, and the types of activities and entertainment found at a Renaissance festival. They will also create their own mini Renaissance festival experience at home!

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper for drawing and writing
  • Craft supplies (like colored markers, scissors, and glue)
  • Costume pieces (like a cape or hat, if available)
  • Access to the internet for research (if possible)

Before starting, it may be helpful to have a brief overview of the Renaissance period, including its time frame (14th to 17th century) and its significance in art, science, and culture.

Activities

  • Renaissance Research:

Have the student choose one aspect of the Renaissance they find interesting (like knights, queens, or artists) and do a little research on it. They can write down three facts they find fascinating.

  • Costume Creation:

Using the craft supplies, the student can design and create a simple Renaissance costume. They can draw inspiration from pictures of Renaissance clothing or invent their own design!

  • Mini Festival Planning:

The student will plan a mini Renaissance festival at home. They can decide on activities, games, and food they would like to include. Encourage them to think creatively!

  • Storytelling:

Have the student create a short story set in the Renaissance period. They can include characters like a brave knight or a clever jester, and share their story with family members.
