Lesson Activities:

Introduction (5 mins)

Ask your student: "Have you ever heard of a girl named Goldilocks? What about three bears who live in the woods? Today we're going to read a fun story about them!" Build excitement for the story.

Reading the Story (10-15 mins)

Read 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears' aloud. Use different voices for the characters (Papa Bear's deep voice, Mama Bear's medium voice, Baby Bear's small voice, and Goldilocks' voice). Pay attention to the descriptions of the porridge, chairs, and beds.

Story Discussion (10 mins)

Ask questions like:

  • Who are the characters in the story? (Goldilocks, Papa Bear, Mama Bear, Baby Bear)
  • Where does the story take place? (In the woods, in the bears' house)
  • What did Goldilocks try first? (The porridge) What was wrong with Papa Bear's? Mama Bear's? Whose was just right?
  • What did she try next? (The chairs) What happened with each chair?
  • What did she try last? (The beds) Whose bed was just right?
  • How do you think the bears felt when they came home?
  • Was it okay for Goldilocks to go into the bears' house without asking? Why or why not?

Activity 1: Size Comparison (5-10 mins)

If you have the bowls, chairs, and blankets/pillows, have the student identify which one is Papa Bear's (large), Mama Bear's (medium), and Baby Bear's (small). If not using props, draw three different-sized bowls, chairs, or beds and have the student label them or point to the correct one as you name the bear.

Activity 2: Story Sequencing & Retelling (10 mins)

Draw three simple pictures (or use pre-made ones if available) depicting: 1. Goldilocks tasting porridge. 2. Goldilocks sitting in chairs. 3. Goldilocks sleeping in beds. Ask the student to put them in the order they happened in the story. Encourage the student to retell the story using the pictures as prompts.

Wrap-up (5 mins)

Review the story elements: "So, who was in our story today? Where did it happen? What did Goldilocks do?" Praise the student's participation and understanding. Ask them what their favorite part of the story was.
