Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create a colorful piece of visual art using basic drawing techniques. They will explore their creativity and express their ideas visually, while also learning about color mixing and composition.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil
  • Paper (any kind)
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • Watercolors (if available)
  • Paper towels (for cleaning up)
  • Optional: A reference image or photo for inspiration

Before starting the lesson, ensure that the workspace is clean and organized. Have all materials ready to encourage creativity without interruptions.

Activities

  • Color Wheel Creation:

The student will create their own color wheel using colored pencils or crayons. They will learn how to mix primary colors to create secondary colors, making it a fun way to understand color relationships.

  • Nature Drawing:

Go outside (or look out a window) and observe nature. The student will choose something they see, like a flower or tree, and draw it. This encourages observation and helps them practice drawing what they see.

  • Abstract Art Exploration:

Using watercolors or colored pencils, the student will create an abstract piece. They can freely mix colors and shapes, allowing them to express their feelings without worrying about making it look realistic.

Talking Points

  • "What colors do you see in nature? Can you mix them to create new colors?"
  • "Drawing is like telling a story without words. What story do you want to tell with your art?"
  • "Why do you think artists use different colors? How do colors make you feel?"
  • "Look at your color wheel! What happens when you mix red and yellow? What new color do you get?"
  • "When you draw something from nature, try to notice the details. What makes it special?"
  • "Abstract art is all about feelings. What do you feel when you use bright colors?"
  • "Art can be anything you want it to be. What do you want to create today?"
  • "Remember, there are no mistakes in art. Every line and color is part of your masterpiece!"
