Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand what a Mosasaur is, where it lived, what it ate, and some interesting facts about this prehistoric creature.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • Pencil
  • Access to a computer or tablet (optional for research)

Before the lesson, it might be helpful to watch a short video about Mosasaurs to get the student excited. You can find many fun videos online that show what they looked like and how they lived!

Activities

  • Mosasaur Drawing: The student will draw their own version of a Mosasaur. Encourage them to be creative! They can add fun colors or even give it a silly expression.

  • Story Time: The student will write a short story about a day in the life of a Mosasaur. What does it eat? Who does it play with? This will help them use their imagination!

  • Mosasaur Facts Game: Create a fun quiz game where the student can guess if a statement about Mosasaurs is true or false. For example, "Did Mosasaurs live in the ocean?" (True!)

Talking Points

  • "A Mosasaur is a big sea creature that lived a long, long time ago, during the time of the dinosaurs!"
  • "Mosasaur means 'lizard of the Meuse River.' They were actually more like reptiles than fish!"
  • "They could grow as long as a school bus! Imagine swimming next to something that big!"
  • "Mosasaur was a carnivore, which means it loved to eat meat. It might have eaten fish, squid, and even other marine reptiles!"
  • "Mosasaur had a long body and a powerful tail, which helped it swim really fast in the ocean!"
  • "They had sharp teeth, perfect for catching slippery fish. Can you imagine how many fish they could eat in one day?"
  • "Mosasaur fossils have been found all over the world, which helps scientists learn more about them. Isn't it cool that we can find their bones even today?"
