Objective

By the end of this lesson, Charlie will be able to analyze the characters from the Total Drama series, discussing their personalities, motivations, and relationships with one another. Charlie will also learn how to express opinions and support them with examples from the show.

Materials and Prep

  • Access to Total Drama episodes (streaming service or DVD)
  • Notebook or journal for notes
  • Writing utensils (pencils, pens)
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (optional)

Before the lesson, ensure Charlie has watched at least the first few episodes of Total Drama to understand the main characters and their dynamics.

Activities

  • Character Mapping:

Charlie will create a character map for three main characters from Total Drama. Each character's traits, motivations, and relationships will be illustrated visually. This will help Charlie see how characters interact and develop throughout the series.

  • Character Debate:

Charlie will participate in a friendly debate about which character is the best or the worst. This activity will require Charlie to think critically about the characters and defend their opinions with specific examples from the show.

  • Character Journals:

Charlie will write a journal entry from the perspective of one of the characters. This will encourage empathy and a deeper understanding of the character's motivations and challenges.

Talking Points

  • "What makes a character relatable or interesting? Think about what you like or dislike about each character."
  • "How do the characters' personalities affect their decisions and relationships? Can you give an example?"
  • "Why do you think the creators chose to portray characters in a certain way? What message might they be sending?"
  • "How do the conflicts in the show drive the plot forward? Can you identify a key conflict and its resolution?"
  • "What lessons or morals do you think can be learned from the characters' experiences?"
  • "How do you feel about the way the characters are designed? Do their looks match their personalities?"
  • "Which character do you find the most surprising or complex, and why?"
