Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a basic understanding of inline skating, including safety practices, basic movements, and fun skating techniques. They will also develop confidence in their ability to skate and enjoy the activity.

Materials and Prep

  • Inline skates
  • Helmet
  • Wrist guards
  • Knee pads
  • Elbow pads
  • Water bottle (to stay hydrated)

Before the lesson, ensure that the inline skates are the right size and in good condition. Make sure all safety gear fits properly and is comfortable to wear.

Activities

  • Warm-Up Stretching

Start with some fun stretching exercises to warm up the muscles. Try reaching for your toes, stretching your arms, and doing some gentle side bends. This helps prevent injuries and makes skating more enjoyable!

  • Safety First!

Discuss the importance of wearing safety gear. Have the student put on their helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards. Explain how each piece of gear protects them while skating.

  • Basic Skating Techniques

Practice standing still on skates and balancing. Then, try gliding forward a few feet. Encourage the student to push off with one foot and glide on the other. This will help them feel comfortable moving.

  • Fun Skating Games

Play a game of "Skate and Stop." The student skates around and must stop quickly when you call out "Stop!" This helps them practice control and stopping techniques in a fun way.

  • Creative Moves

Encourage the student to try different moves like turning, spinning, or even a little dance while skating. This will help them express themselves and enjoy the freedom of skating!

Talking Points

  • "Why do we wear safety gear? It helps keep us safe and prevents injuries!"
  • "What is balance? It’s how we stay upright on our skates. Let’s practice balancing on one foot!"
  • "How do we glide? We push off with one foot and let the other foot roll. It’s like flying on wheels!"
  • "What happens when we want to stop? We can use the brake on our skates or turn our feet sideways. Stopping is super important!"
  • "Can you show me your favorite skating move? Let’s see how creative you can be while skating!"
