Objective
By the end of this lesson, Santiago will learn about the beach ecosystem, the importance of keeping our environment clean, and how to safely interact with wildlife, all while having fun exploring and using his imagination.
Materials and Prep
- Sand (can be simulated with a sandbox or a pile of dirt if available)
- Water (a small tub or bucket of water)
- Shells (real or toy shells)
- Rocks (real or toy rocks)
- Trash (use safe items like crumpled paper or plastic wrappers)
- Imaginary baby turtle (Santiago can pretend with a toy or draw one)
Before the lesson, ensure the area is safe for play and all materials are ready. Explain to Santiago what he will be doing today.
Activities
-
Shell Collecting Adventure
Set up a 'beach' area with sand and water. Let Santiago explore and collect shells and rocks. Encourage him to describe each shell and rock he finds, asking questions like, "What color is it?" or "Is it smooth or rough?"
-
Beach Cleanup Challenge
Introduce the trash items and explain how important it is to keep the beach clean. Santiago can 'clean up' the beach by picking up the trash and placing it in a designated area. Talk about how trash can hurt animals and plants.
-
Baby Turtle Rescue Role Play
Using the imaginary baby turtle, let Santiago practice rescuing it and bringing it to the water. Ask him how he feels about helping the turtle and what he thinks will happen when it swims away.
Talking Points
- "Santiago, what do you think lives in the ocean? Can you name some animals?"
- "Why do we need to pick up trash? How does it help the turtles and other animals?"
- "What do you think the baby turtle felt when you helped it? Was it happy?"
- "Can you tell me what you like most about the beach? Is it the sand, the water, or the shells?"
- "How can we help keep our beaches clean every day? What can we do at home?"
