Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jordan will understand the basics of BMX bike racing, including its history, techniques, and safety measures. He will also be able to identify key skills needed for racing and will have a plan for practicing these skills in a safe environment.

Materials and Prep

  • BMX bike (if available)
  • Helmet and safety gear (knee and elbow pads)
  • Open space or a local BMX track
  • Notebook and pencil for taking notes
  • Access to a computer or device for research (optional)

Before the lesson, make sure Jordan has his bike and safety gear ready. If you can, visit a local BMX track or an open area where he can practice safely.

Activities

  • BMX History Exploration:

Start with a brief research activity where Jordan can learn about the origins of BMX racing, including key figures and milestones in the sport's development. He can present his findings in a short summary.

  • Safety Gear Fashion Show:

Have Jordan try on his safety gear and discuss the importance of each piece. He can even create a fun fashion show where he explains why wearing safety gear is crucial for BMX racing.

  • Skill Drills:

Set up a small obstacle course in your yard or at a local park. Have Jordan practice essential skills like starting, stopping, turning, and jumping. Focus on perfecting his technique and building confidence.

  • Race Simulation:

If possible, invite a friend or family member to race against Jordan. This will help him experience the excitement of racing and understand the importance of strategy and speed.
