Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic math concepts such as addition and subtraction through fun Minecraft-themed activities, as well as enhance their English vocabulary by describing their Minecraft creations.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil for writing and drawing.
- Access to Minecraft (optional for inspiration).
- Knowledge of basic addition and subtraction (numbers up to 20).
- Familiarity with Minecraft items and creatures (like blocks, mobs, etc.).
Activities
-
Minecraft Math Challenge: Create a list of Minecraft items (like 5 diamonds, 3 gold ingots, etc.). Ask the student to add them up to find the total number of items. Then, have them subtract a few items to see how many are left.
-
Build and Describe: Have the student design a small structure in Minecraft (or draw it on paper). They should then write a few sentences describing what they built, using new vocabulary words related to their creation.
-
Crafting Recipe Math: Use the idea of crafting in Minecraft to create a math problem. For example, if it takes 2 sticks and 3 pieces of wood to make a crafting table, ask how many sticks and wood they would need to make 2 crafting tables.
Talking Points
- "What do you think happens when we add more items together in Minecraft? Can you show me with your math?"
- "When you build something, how would you describe it to a friend? What words would you use?"
- "Let’s pretend we are crafting! How many of each item do we need to make something cool? Let’s solve it together!"
- "Why is it important to know how many items we have left? How does this help you in Minecraft?"
- "Can you think of a time in Minecraft when you had to use math? What did you do?"
- "How can writing about your Minecraft creations help others understand what you built?"
- "What is your favorite item in Minecraft? Let’s count how many you would need to make something special!"
- "If you could describe your creation in three words, what would they be? Let’s write them down!"
