Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the basic components of making a sauce, follow a simple sauce recipe, and gain confidence in their cooking skills. They will also learn about flavor balancing and the importance of using fresh ingredients.

  • Fresh herbs (like basil or oregano)
  • A cutting board
  • A knife
  • A pot or saucepan
  • A wooden spoon
  • A stove

Before the lesson, ensure that all ingredients are washed and prepared for cooking. Discuss basic knife safety and kitchen hygiene.

Activities

  • Ingredient Exploration:

    Start by examining each ingredient. Discuss the role of each one in the sauce and how they contribute to the overall flavor. Encourage the student to smell and taste the ingredients where appropriate.

  • Cooking Demonstration:

    Walk through the cooking process together. Start by sautéing onions and garlic in olive oil, then add tomatoes and seasonings. Let the student take turns stirring and adding ingredients as you go along.

  • Taste Test:

    Once the sauce is finished, conduct a taste test! Discuss what flavors stand out and if anything could be improved. This is a great opportunity to talk about balancing flavors.

  • Creative Variation:

    Encourage the student to think of ways to modify the sauce recipe. What other ingredients could they add? What if they wanted a spicy sauce? Let them brainstorm and create their own version!
