Objective

By the end of this lesson, Gavin will have a deeper understanding of the themes and historical contexts in "The Bronze Bow," "The Travels of St. Paul," and "Julius Caesar." He will also engage in creative expression through art and writing, connecting these themes to his own life and the world around him.

Materials and Prep

  • Copy of "The Bronze Bow" by Elizabeth George Speare
  • Copy of "Julius Caesar" by William Shakespeare
  • Notebook and pens for writing
  • Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, paper)
  • Access to "Mystery of History Volume 2" for reference
  • Pre-read the chapters about St. Paul and Julius Caesar to prepare discussion points

Activities

  • Character Map Creation: Gavin will create a character map for key figures in "The Bronze Bow" and "Julius Caesar." He will illustrate each character and write a few sentences about their motivations and relationships. This will help him visualize the connections between characters and their historical significance.

  • Creative Writing Prompt: Gavin will write a diary entry from the perspective of a character in "The Bronze Bow" or "Julius Caesar." He will focus on a pivotal moment in the story and express the character's thoughts and feelings. This activity encourages empathy and deeper character understanding.

  • Artistic Timeline: Gavin will create a timeline of events from "The Travels of St. Paul" and "Julius Caesar," illustrating key moments with drawings or symbols. This visual representation will help him grasp the sequence of events and their importance in history.

  • Group Discussion: After completing the activities, Gavin will engage in a discussion about the themes of courage, faith, and betrayal found in both "The Bronze Bow" and "Julius Caesar." This will allow him to articulate his thoughts and learn from different perspectives.
