Objective

By the end of this lesson, Gavin will understand the main themes and characters of "The Red Badge of Courage" and be able to discuss the significance of courage and fear in the context of the story. He will also be able to express his thoughts creatively through writing and art.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook or journal for writing
  • Colored pencils or markers for drawing
  • Access to a quiet space for reading and reflection

Before the lesson, Gavin should have a brief overview of the Civil War, as it is the backdrop for the story. It might also be helpful to discuss what courage means to him personally.

Activities

  • Reading and Discussion:

Start by reading a selected passage from "The Red Badge of Courage." After reading, discuss the emotions and thoughts of the main character, Henry Fleming, during a pivotal moment in the story.

  • Character Mapping:

Create a character map for Henry Fleming. Gavin can draw a picture of Henry and write down key traits, motivations, and how he changes throughout the story.

  • Courage vs. Fear Journal Entry:

Gavin will write a journal entry reflecting on a time when he felt scared but had to be brave. He can share this with you afterward if he feels comfortable.

  • Artistic Expression:

Using colored pencils or markers, Gavin can create a drawing that represents his interpretation of courage. This could be inspired by the story or his own experiences.
