Objective
By the end of this lesson, Dalton will be able to solve simple addition problems and addition word problems using fun manipulatives, drawings, and number sentences. He will understand how to add numbers together and express these ideas clearly.
Materials and Prep
- Counters (e.g., small toys, buttons)
- Whiteboard or projector
- Markers
- Addition worksheets (included below)
- Picture cards with simple addition scenarios (optional)
Before the lesson, make sure to gather all materials and prepare the addition worksheets and picture cards if using them.
Activities
- Counting Warm-Up: Start by counting from 1 to 20 together. This will help Dalton feel confident in his counting skills!
- Manipulative Addition: Use counters to visually show addition. For example, place 3 counters on the table and then add 2 more. Ask Dalton to count how many there are in total!
- Visual Representation: Draw pictures on the board, like 2 apples and then add 1 more apple. Dalton can write the number sentence (2 + 1 = 3) to show what he sees.
- Word Problems: Read fun scenarios using picture cards to create word problems. For example, "There are 2 birds on a branch, and 1 more bird flies to join them. How many birds are there now?"
- Worksheet Fun: Give Dalton addition worksheets where he can practice solving problems on his own or with counters.
Talking Points
- "When we add, we are putting things together! Can you help me count how many counters we have?"
- "Look at this drawing of apples! If I have 2 apples and I add 1 more, how many do I have? Let's write it down together!"
- "The '+' sign means we are adding. Can you say 'plus'? Great job!"
- "Let's solve this word problem together! If there are 3 dogs and 2 more come, how many dogs do we have now? Let's count!"
- "You can use your counters or draw pictures to help you solve these problems. What do you want to use?"
- "Remember, adding is fun! Can you think of your own addition problem to share with me?"
